Research focus: Sustainable, competitive and secure energy as one of the basic pillards of our daily life
From the first time mankind set fire to a piece of wood, the history of human development has been inextricably linked to our ability to exploit energy. Set against the backdrop of a growing global demand for energy to power economic development and growth, today we are faced with a huge challenge.
In response to this ever growing challenge, current focus of research and demonstration actions are on accelerating the development of energy technologies towards cost-effectiveness for a more sustainable energy economy. The goal is to improve energy efficiency through the energy system taking into account the global environmental performance; accelerate the penetration of renewable energy sources; decarbonize power generation and, in the longer term, decarbonize transport; and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Recognising that none of the technologies being developed can make a sufficient difference on their own and that their commercialization will take place over different time horizons, there are a number of reserch groups worldwide working in different approaches. Within this framework, we at IDENER participate in multidisciplinary research related to renewable energy sources, hydrogen-based energy storage, smart electricity networks and energy efficiency, by means of comprehensive application of system optimization techniques and advanced control engineering.
